Success via good planning with good software

I am doing a major renovation and from past experience know the importance of having a good plan. This has been an ongoing project. Over the years I have used other software to do design. Since I was planning a major renovation I felt it was time to get the latest and best. In web reviews Chief Architect seemed to come out on top. In the past I used 3 D Home Architect (2001 software). I could bring these files into the Chief Architect Home Suite which gave me options. I used Punch (2005 software) and felt the older 3D Home Architect was better. After trying Chief Architect's demo version I soon purchase the Home Designer Suite. Like any software, especially software with allot of power and versatility there is a learning curve. The online help videos and reference manuals were very helpful. In a short time I was able to model an as built replica of my house which formed the basis for my renovation. The as built looks like my house. Once done I was able to model and visualize various renovation options from which to make decisions and share with friends to get suggestions. The software is easier to use and more versatile than other software I have tired. I give the software 5 stars. My advise if you have a major project -take the time to put together a good plan and the time to learn the Chief Architect software to take advantage of its power and versatility.

Unfortunate Version Limitations

There is a lot to like about this software, but there are significant disappointments as well. Creating a floor plan is fairly straightforward and the software is reasonably capable. Some things are a challenge, like which direction a pocket door slides, however. And there are some major limitations in this version, including fixture selections, fireplace layout, roof types and slopes, and especially an open beam ceiling. To match up to reality, you would need the expensive ($500) version unless you had plain vanilla everything-- and therein lies my biggest disappointment. For all of the capabilities shown on the website, what is not revealed is that you need the expensive model to do most of the things shown. The ability to look through a 3-D version of what you created is very cool; however, the inability to create what I wanted (because of version limitations) prevented me from making my intended use of the software and seeing my proposed changes-- And for not much more than $500 (for the capable version) I can pay someone else to do what I want and save the time and effort. I returned it.

Nice application

I'm not an architect by any means and I don't have any previous experience with CAD, but I was hoping to find a software application that I could use to start putting together a somewhat cohesive plan for the builders to use on my next home. Sort of a brain dump to get all my conceptual ideas on a computer screen so I (and eventually the builders) could visualize what I want, and potentially identify any design flaws and address them in the planning stage. I researched the various software options and compared the advertised functionality, then decided to take a chance with Home Designer 2016. They have an extensive knowledge base, impressive collection of training videos and webinars, a very helpful user forum, step-by-step tutorials, an in-depth reference guide, and if you still can't find exactly what you are looking for through all of these help functions you are encouraged to contact Customer Service directly. And yes, there is a training curve as you might expect with any application that can do as much as this one does. In fact, to be quite honest I initially had a love/hate relationship with it as I was fumbling my way through my initial tutorial. The first time I decided to check out the 3-D view and the glasshouse view, I found that my car and all the cool cabinets and garage stuff had seemingly dropped through the floor into the foundation (entirely my own error, and now corrected). I kept pushing through and within a couple of days I started to get the hang of it. Then I found it to be so much fun it was almost addictive, moving walls/doors/windows, adding rooms, building my dream kitchen, customizing a walk-in closet, furnishing and accessorizing the living room - it has a huge library of items you can add to interiors/exteriors. It also has a feature called Plan Check which you can use to see any potential errors as you are working on your plan. I'm very happy with both the application, and the responsiveness and professionalism of Customer Service on the two occasions I've contacted them (so far).
